Harbert Retail Represents California-Based Nonprofit, The Kelsey, in Land Purchase for New Development

The Kelsey, a San Francisco-based nonprofit that advocates for and co-develops affordable, accessible housing for people with disabilities, is teaming up with local leaders to bring disability-forward, inclusive and affordable housing to Avondale. Harbert Retail’s Casey Howard represented the organization in the recent purchase of 0.77 acres of land at 4121 3rd Avenue South, Birmingham, AL 35222 for $1,150,000. The Retail Companies Bill Clements and Brooks Corr represented the land seller.

The Kelsey Avondale will house people with and without disabilities, and the building will be designed according to The Kelsey’s Inclusive Design Standards, which go beyond meeting the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) accessibility standard requirements.

25% of the facility will have affordable units for people with disabilities. The other 75% of the units have mixed affordability for people earning a range such as 20% to 60% Average Median Income (AMI).

The Avondale site was specifically chosen for its proximity to amenities and transportation, a critical factor for residents who may not drive a car. The neighborhood is walkable, wheelable, close to a bus stop and near organizations like Workshops Empowerment Inc. and some child care centers.
